Limited account runaround

All I wanted to do was to setup a Hamachi VPN so I could support my sister-in-law via UltraVNC. The laptop came with XP-Home, and she has several work apps that require Windows so no linux. Under her login (as Administrator) it all worked great. But under the kids' logins (the so called limited user account) Hamachi fails to run due to insufficient privileges to install a new network adapter.

While this is reasonable, it took me a few trys until I rechecked the feature list on the hamachi website. Running as a service is only in the paid version. AHA!

So far I have:

  1. Buy it
  2. SrvAny
  3. Change to a runas /savecred (and hope it always remembers..)
  4. Use psexec to launch it as a privileged user
  5. Um.. tear hair out

Options other than number 1 have the problem of not running until after the user has logged in, which for remote support is just not good enough. Also if the machine reboots unexpectedly it leaves the remote tech at the mercy of the user being there to login for them. Joy.

Very useful string of suggestions from:
