DD-WRT
From Osnow
This documents the loading of a Linksys WRT54G v3 with DD-WRT for Los Lupes (the local restaurant we meet at).
A few things:
- We load the free version first
- Then we load the commercial version ($22) for the hotspot functionality
- Read! http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installation
Our Router:
- Our router is used, $30
- Our router is 16MB RAM, 4MB Flash, Broadcomm based.
The critical piece of knowledge is which load to use! Start with mini and work your way up...
Mini contains all the features of the standard distribution, with the exception of chillispot, nocat, rflow, kaid, CIFS client, SNMP, IPv6, and MMC/SD card support.
Standard (std) distribution includes all features, with the exception of VOIP.
Standard-nokaid (std-nokaid) distribution includes all features of standard, with kaid removed to free some flash space.
VOIP includes all features, with kaid removed to make room for Milkfish.
VPN edition includes OpenVPN but does not include IPv6, CIFS client, or kaid.
micro edition is a stripped down version designed for the WRT54G v5 and other 2MB router models.
- Download Mini-Build required for inital flashing via WEB (ie: dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic.bin)
- Disconnect from internet,
- Connect with a wired ethernet to router in a LAN side port (not WAN)
- Power up and reset Linksys
- Hold reset button down on back
- Plug in power cord
- Keep holding the reset key for a count of 5 "Hippopotamus"
- Release reset button, computer should DHCP from the router automatically
- Computer should be 192.168.1.100, Linksys should be 192.168.1.1 (at this point).
- If it is not, then repeat the reset holding one second longer.
- Be careful not to hold for longer than 10 seconds! That requires a TFTP server to recover (load firmware).
- Open a browser and goto http://192.168.1.1
- User: admin
- Pass: admin
- Click on Administration -> Firmware
- Pick the mini-generic firmware you just grabbed, and click upload.
- When it is done, unplug Linksys power, wait 5 seconds, plug in power...
And go to step 2!
- Computer should DHCP as 192.168.1.128, Linksys should still be 192.168.1.1
- Open browser and goto http://192.168.1.1
- If you see the DD-WRT status page, Congrats!
- Click on Administration
- User: root
- Pass: admin
- Click on Firmware Update
- Select 'Reset to Default settings'
- Choose the paid version of the firmware...
- Click 'upload'
And go to step 3!
- Computer should DHCP as 192.168.1.100, Linksys should still be 192.168.1.1
- Change the default password to something you will remember
- U: root
- P: ?????? Earnest
- Click anywhere to login and make sure the name change took
- power cycle again, 5 seconds or so dead off!
- Power back up, wait..., regain connection to router, login.
